San Antonio Spurs point guard George Hill has quickly risen to honorable mention in NBA discussions in just his second year in the league. With starting point guard Tony Parker lame or out most of the season, George Hill has elevated his game to near star status. Hill is currently averaging 2.9 assists and 12.7 points on 47.7%. His scoring is even understated at this point as the second year player has only missed double figures six times since January 10.
Although he is only 6'2'', George has extremely long arms which assist him in defending bigger players and scoring in the paint. He also possesses above average athleticism and very good quickness that allow him to initiate the Spurs offense, create space, and get his shot up easily. Hill's three point shot has become near lethal after much work throughout the off season on his outside game.
On defense, Hill is a nightmare against nonathletic opponents but struggles mightily when matched up against bigger, just as athletic players. His lateral quickness is average and he has shown that he is very susceptible to getting blown by when faced by some of the uber quick point guards like Aaron Brooks or Devin Harris or guards with near elite quickness like Deron Williams or Jameer Nelson.
Despite all his positive attributes, the intangibles are what have Hill's name repeatedly being mentioned as "most improved player". Hill has absolutely no fear of plays one of the biggest names in the game. It has to be Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant matched among other superstars. No matter what the reader, George is apparently just as hard and takes his game a bit 'intensity have yet to meet.
Hill is the character of the system a perfect fit for San Antonio Spurs. Gregg Popovich is very demanding and rarely plays the younger players significant minutes, but # 3 has commanded minutes because of its fast learning curve andSpurs embrace the system of discipline. Moreover, its smooth writing and a willingness to be flexible allows him to take command of the offense, and sometimes to pass to Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan others.
